Day 6

Word Count: 10575

Dialogue should not be a filler.

Dialogue Tips

As I was writing a scene with a lot of dialogue, I started to feel like I was just typing a conversation verbatim rather than really getting to the core feeling that I was trying to convey.  It was like staring at a 1-dimensional picture with a 4-dimensional mindset.  It just wasn’t working.  I felt like I telling rather than showing.

“I will find the cure.”  The cure?  My heart raced as the panic tugged at my chest.

“What’s going on?” I asked.  “Dad, you’re scaring me.”

“There’s nothing to be scared about Lizzy.”

“The scourge is something to fear, Kenneth.  Don’t lie to her.  You’ve decided your fate and given up before we’ve even had the chance to look for a viable solution.”

“Death finds everyone.  You can’t hide from his piercing gaze.  He comes unseen on wings as silent as one’s thoughts leaving a permanent mark on the world.”

“Kenneth,” Dreven said.

“Tell me what happened,” I pleaded.  Dad took a deep breath before he answered.  I could see the cogs in his mind turning on end.  “Dad?”

“I’m sick, Lizzy.”

So the question is: do I continue on with this type of dialogue or do I change the scene?

Dialogue should be used for a purpose.  It should not act as a filler.  Every piece of dialogue gives the reader insight into the mind of a character.   After a few hours of brainstorming and through the use of trial and error, I think I have found a good balance between dialogue, action, and inner thought.

The story didn’t flow at first, and there are probably some more things that I need to correct, but if I’m going to hit my word count for today, I need to push on!!!
